Administrators configure Continued Learning per playlist to automate recurring reassignment (recertification) or progress learners to a different playlist. This page covers configuration, ongoing management, and reporting.
Configuring Continued Learning
Continued Learning lives in the Advanced section of the playlist create and edit form. Turn on the Continued Learning toggle to reveal the configuration options. The feature ships off for all playlists until enabled.
Trigger
Select when the schedule is evaluated for each learner. Only one trigger can be active at a time.
On assignment of this playlist: evaluated when a learner is assigned this playlist, whether individually, in bulk, or via automatic assignment.
On completion of this playlist: evaluated when a learner completes all courses in this playlist. Learners who do not complete the playlist never fire the schedule; playlist reporting surfaces them.
Schedule
On a specific date: choose a Day and Month. Learners are assigned on the same date each year. Learners triggered within 30 days before the configured date are skipped to the following year. Impossible dates (for example 31 April or 29 February) are blocked by the form.
After a set number of days: enter the number of days after the trigger event. Whole numbers only, between 1 and 1000. Values outside this range show the validation message "Must be between 1 and 1000 days."
Playlist
Assign this playlist (default): learners are reassigned this playlist on the configured schedule.
Assign a different playlist: choose a target from a searchable dropdown. The dropdown only lists Active playlists; Draft and Archived playlists are excluded, and the playlist cannot target itself. The selected playlist name is displayed in the saved configuration.
What Happens When the Schedule Fires
A daily automated run reassigns every due learner without manual intervention.
Completed learners keep their completion record (shown as Completed in reporting) and receive a fresh assignment.
In-progress learners have their current attempt marked Incomplete and receive a fresh assignment. Courses they were partway through keep their progress; only the playlist tracking moves to the new cycle.
Learners are notified when the new assignment is created.
Learners are never reassigned twice in the same cycle, even if the run is retried.
When assigning a different playlist, the assignment is skipped and the learner's scheduled date is cleared if the target is archived, the learner does not meet the target's availability restrictions, or the learner already has an in-flight assignment on the target.
Managing Continued Learning on a Live Playlist
Turning Continued Learning off: no new reassignments are scheduled, and learners with an already-scheduled date are not reassigned; their scheduled date is cleared when it comes due. Re-enabling the feature does not restore cleared dates.
Cancelling a learner's assignment clears their scheduled reassignment date; no future reassignment occurs.
Archiving the playlist cancels in-progress learners, clears all scheduled reassignment dates, and stops all future cycles.
Changing Continued Learning settings on an Active playlist does not recalculate dates already scheduled for learners. ❓ [Gap: recalculation of in-flight dates on settings change is planned under LMS-14943 but not yet built; confirm current copy before publishing]
Reporting
The playlist report includes a Continued Learning Date column showing each learner's next scheduled date.
Learners reassigned mid-progress appear as Incomplete, distinct from learners whose assignment an administrator cancelled.
Recertified learners keep their prior cycle shown as Completed alongside their new in-progress cycle, and are included when filtering by Completed.
The In Progress count on the playlist page excludes learners in Incomplete and Reassigned states.
